Boost Competitive Edge: Start Blogging

That’s the most frequently asked question I hear. My answer is a definite “YES”!  I typically get the follow up question, “Well, why”? I share with those asking that businesses need to find a way to stand out in the crowd. They need to discover ways to set themselves apart from their competition. A strong online presence and, specifically, blogging are key to help them do just that. For those of you who haven’t started blogging YET, I’ll be sharing some reasons I think you should strongly consider adding blogging to your current plan.

Engagement

Did you know that interesting content is one of the top 3 reasons people follow brands on social media? Let’s face it, informative and thought provoking content is the fuel to social media success. People are hungry for content that solves their problems, answers their questions, or just plain entertains them.

Businesses that constantly post sales pitchy material via social media channels don’t enjoy the same engagement as those who share their value packed blog posts. Additionally, statistics reveal that 81% of U.S. consumers trust advice and information that they read on a blog. It’s obvious to me that if people are searching for information, then you should be the one providing it for them. This is especially true if your competitors haven’t jumped on the blogging bandwagon. Writing engaging and informative blog posts, will set you apart from those who aren’t. Furthermore, consistently publishing new material will draw those readers and potential clients back to your website, possibly turning them into buyers.

Decision Making

Before I purchase anything, I jump on the Internet and research the product I am considering. I read product reviews, check out forum discussions and watch YouTube videos about the product. In fact, 61% of U.S. consumers have made a purchase based on a blog post, and well written articles generated 126% more leads. Hearing this should definitely light a fire under your blogging activities.

Why is this happening? This is happening because businesses selling similar products are sharing blog posts providing more information about products and services so that buyers can make educated decisions. Chances are they will buy the product or service from the business which provides the most valuable information.

Search Engine Optimization

Every website owner strives to land on the first pages of Google. With the latest update to Google, blogging is a key component in doing just that. Google wants to provide searchers with the best content available online. For this reason, businesses that publish on a consistent basis are seeing an increase in the organic traffic to their websites.

Blogging increases the number of indexed pages and links as well as the number of inbound links (the number of websites linking to your website). Done well and consistently blogging can be an extremely important factor in improving SEO.

Blogging provides numerous benefits to your online marketing strategies. Great content reaches out to customers and leads, keeping them informed and engaged. It helps buyers make educated decisions and it boosts the effectiveness of your SEO efforts. These are all win-win situations.     • Hi Rick, there are a number of options available for advertising your blog. These include:

      1. Submitting your blog post to your social media networks.
      2. Submitting your blog post to social sharing sites such as StumbleUpon, Digg and Reddit.
      3. Leaving comments on other niche related blogs.
      4. Writing as a guest blogger on niche related blogs and/or hosting a relevant guest blogger on your blog.
      5. Pay-per click advertising through Google Adwords, Facebook and Twitter.
      6. Create a profile on community sites where you can import your RSS feed.

      Personally, I have found that sharing my blog posts on my social media and social sharing networks as well as commenting on niche related blogs to be extremely effective. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

      Steve, you can’t go wrong with WordPress. I suggest you go with the self-hosted option. I’ll leave it to Cindy to share her own opinion.

    • You are absolutely right, Mallie. WordPress is my recommendation. However, I am referring to the self-hosted WordPress not WordPress.com. That means that you purchase website hosting from a hosting company like GoDaddy, BlueHost, HostGator, etc. and then have WordPress installed on that hosting provider. WordPress offers a multitude of features and flexibility. It’s definitely my first choice as a blogging platform. If you have other questions, please let me know.
